Chapter Update: Online Meetings

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Dallas-Ft. Worth has been researching alternatives to the current meeting structure, location and time. After seeing attendance fluctuate greatly from one event to another, it was clear that we were not meeting the needs of our members to the utmost. This prompted us to send out messages, collect survey information and brainstorm better ways to serve all members.

What became clear early only is that we have some very willing members within our community without a doubt. The accessibility was, however, not up to par with those members needs. As such, until we can better meet the physical needs of all of you, our members, we will be holding monthly meetings online. This is very exciting step forward to serving as many of you as possible.

This does not mean we will not be holding physical events in the future. Far from it! We will leave the option of game nights open. However, if RSVP for any give event is lower than 3, the event will be canceled. We will look at plans for the upcoming Autistic Pride Day, the possibility of mini-conferences and workshops, as well as other community outreach projects. So please join us on our Meetup page and for our Online Meeting, time TBD.

Cancelling November and December General Meetings

After some consideration, we have decided to cancel our November and December general meetings for the holidays. As it gets dark earlier, we’re bustling about for Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday celebrations, we felt that everyone would feel better holding off until after the New Year has begun. If this inconveniences you, I greatly apologize as this was not the plan.

Wrap Up from November Game Night

For those who did not get the opportunity to come, you were missed. We hope that you’ll be able to join us next time as we had a lot of fun, playing, talking and socializing.

We were able to sit down altogether at one table at Madness Comics and Games and enjoy uninterrupted fun. An extra big thanks to Danielle who promoted the event far and wide so that we could all come together. Without your help, I suspect we would not have had near the turn out.

At the end of the meeting, we decided to continue to meet the 2nd Saturday at Madness for game nights. The friendly atmosphere, plenty of space and safe surroundings made everyone comfortable. This means that our game nights will not be ASAN sponsored events, but instead, regular social events. It does not change anything, except that we won’t be hanging a sign saying who we are. This summer in an effort to reach more people, ASAN Dallas changed its name to ASAN-DFW and moved to a Meetup site to coordinate our activities. While our website will stay up to date with information about our meetings, current events–both local and national– and the direction of our public policy initiatives, we ask that anyone interested in any of our events register on Meetup.com as well. This way, you can RSVP for meetings, be alerted to new events, and have discussion with others who also participate.
