8100 Doran Cir. Dallas, TX 75238

On March 6th, George Hodgins, a 22-year old autistic adult in Sunnyvale, California, was murdered by his mother. In the aftermath of his death, most of the media’s attention seemed to focus on expressing sympathy for his killer. In response, members of the local Autistic community organized a candlelit vigil for George and all other disabled people killed by family members.

At the vigil, organizers read a list of names of disabled people murdered by relatives – one of those names was that of Tracy Latimer, a 12-year old Canadian girl with developmental disabilities murdered by her father Robert in 1993. Little did they know that as the vigil went on, Robert Latimer – released from prison and a free man – had taken to the airwaves of a major Canadian television show to call for legalizing the murder of disabled children.

This cannot be allowed to go unanswered. It’s time for disabled people and our allies to organize together to send a clear and unequivocal message: our lives have value and we should be able to live free of violence and acts of murder. On March 30th, help us mourn George Hodgins, Tracy Latimer, and so many more of our brethren killed, often by family members or caregivers, by attending or organizing a candlelit vigil in your own community. The time to stand up for our rights is NOW!

We hope to see a large turnout at our Dallas vigil. We kindly ask that you please do not bring actual candles. You may bring a battery powered candle - any battery powered light source will suffice. A limited number of battery operated candles will be available at the event.

Please note that no food will be served at this event. Bottled water will be available, while supplies last.

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Dallas-Ft. Worth has been researching alternatives to the current meeting structure, location and time. After seeing attendance fluctuate greatly from one event to another, it was clear that we were not meeting the needs of our members to the utmost. This prompted us to send out messages, collect survey information and brainstorm better ways to serve all members.

What became clear early only is that we have some very willing members within our community without a doubt. The accessibility was, however, not up to par with those members needs. As such, until we can better meet the physical needs of all of you, our members, we will be holding monthly meetings online. This is very exciting step forward to serving as many of you as possible.

This does not mean we will not be holding physical events in the future. Far from it! We will leave the option of game nights open. However, if RSVP for any give event is lower than 3, the event will be canceled. We will look at plans for the upcoming Autistic Pride Day, the possibility of mini-conferences and workshops, as well as other community outreach projects. So please join us on our Meetup page and for our Online Meeting, time TBD.
